Has the trumpet of World War III been blown? US troops on high alert US troops on high alert

US President Joe Biden says there is "complete unity" between European leaders and Russian forces along the border with Ukraine. During sensitive talks on Monday, Western powers agreed on "unprecedented sanctions" against Russia if it invades Ukraine. The United States has also deployed 8,500 troops, which Russia says is "extremely worrying". Russia has denied plans to invade Ukraine. However, about 100,000 Russian troops have been deployed along Russia's border with Ukraine. Joining the US and UK in Monday's talks was also attended by leaders of France, Germany, Italy, Poland and the European Union. Nato Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg also took part in the talks by telephone. "I have had a very, very good meeting with all European leaders," Mr Biden said. A spokesman after the meeting said the leaders "agreed on the importance of uniting to counter Russia's growing hostility". Should another Russian invasion of Ukraine take place, they agreed that "the coalition should issue immediate retaliatory measures including unprecedented sanctions". The United States has taken similar action, ordering relatives of embassy staff to leave. Some Nato member states, including Denmark, Spain, France and the Netherlands, are already planning to send fighter jets and warships to Eastern Europe to bolster regional defense.
